September 21- Peace One Day

A day to stop all wars, conflicts and act peacefully, Peace One Day does peace during one day, to achieve peace 'one day'. At the workshop we had an imaginary activity where we were in a village suffering from war. It was a powerful and thought-provoking exercise and discussion. Never had I thought that for some, war makes their life and they would die if it stopped. People also reminded me that a country without war isn't necessarily peaceful.

I keep wondering what is Peace? What can I do for Peace? If we can have peace for one day, why not two days, a week... always? Someone had written "I wish for a world where our worry is having nothing to worry about" in our messages to the leaders of the world. I couldn't agree more.

1. Message to the World Leaders of UN
2. record a love message to someone you care
3. Free Hugs!
4. Random Acts of Kindness- roll a die and with a combination, do something nice :-)
5. Imagination workshop- if you lived in a village in war, what would you do if there was peace for just one day?
6. Video message- Peace is....
7. Postcard to self- What are you going to promise yourself for a more peaceful world?
8. Soccer- Goals represent the UN Millenium goals, if you scored which goals would you like accomplish?

We can make Peace together.

Norse Night and Tea Party

The night of the Fjords, the GETs, together with the help of CC Alex, performed the Norse Night. Kind of like a sequel to Greek Night, this time all the teachers were disguised as the Scandinavian Norse Gods. The play showed a few of the famous Norse stories.

On another day, Clau and I hosted an event- the Tea Party!

Wanting to spread the joy of tea and getting tea-lovers together, we gathered the different teas we had and had a nice afternoon- talking, drinking, guessing...

We labeled each tea and had participants guess what was in the tea. Other than that, it was an opportunity for people to meet, to talk about why or when they like to drink tea.

Events before Atlantic- Fukushima Kids, KSB, Be the Change

Another post about different events we had on the boat, up til the Atlantic that I hadn't written about yet.

1. Fukushima Youth
We had about 30 junior high school students from Minami-souma, Fukushima, during our voyage, between Vietnam and Sri Lanka. It was only about a week, but they were invited to see a little bit of the world and to get a way from the trauma from the 3.11. earthquake.
As a GET teacher, I got the opportunity to interact with these young boys and girls by teaching and doing English games. Every morning for 15 minutes, different GETs went into do some useful English phrases. On another day, I also helped Steven as he planned some cool activities with them.

Near the end of the stay, we also had a "World Party" event for them, where we introduced and "experienced" countries that Peace Boat later visits, but the youth won't be there for. We all had a good time, and we hoped that this experience, one way or another, made it a meaningful one for each of the students. In Sri Lanka, they met with children of same age who also suffered from earthquake and tsunami. What they experienced I can only imagine, and I hope Peace Boat in some way gave them hope or motivation to move on.

2. KSB Intro
Another series of events covered introduction of KokuSaiBu staff- the interpreters called CCs (Communication Coordinators), teachers called GETs, and the web reporter.
I was one of the first ones to be introduced- together with my room mate Ina, and fellow teacher (Spanish) Claudia, and her room mate Silvy.
It is through these formal events, that I also found out so much more about my coworkers- how talented they are, what cool experiences they've had... etc etc.

3. Be the Change
This was another series of events that introduced different sexual orientations and identities, but focussing on the sexual minorities. The panel represented straight, gay, lesbian and transgender identities. I think I was exposed to these kinds of diverse identities most when I went to University in Canada, but I have always been interested and curious to ask more questions and discuss more to deepen my understanding.

3. Be the Change

Above anything else, I think this was a very important series of events for the mostly Japanese participants, who are not exposed to it at all. I saw some faces with question marks, surprises, confusion... as some of the identities were revealed- it is a moment their mind is being stretched.

It is often said that traveling widens your world, but sometimes (i like to believe ALWAYS) there are people around you who can widen your world as much, if not more.

The Majestic Fjords

After the blackout and the delay in refueling, we were finally and luckily at the fjords. It was very very very cold, but the mountains and the view were majestic! It had a different feel from Banff- the mountains were lower but closer and what was the most surprising were the low clouds in between. Just magical!

It was a refresh day (a day off for staff), and for once, I did nothing work related. Instead I knitted a lot, and just hung out with fellow teachers and staff. At night we presented Norse Night where silly looking GET teachers were disguised as Norse Gods and reenacted the Ragnarok battle.

Bergen- Cute houses and rain every few hours

Bergen

A place where it rains 275 days a year, Bergen was a cute, cozy, colorful and relaxing town. Norway had never been in the list of places to go, but with this visit I appreciated that Peace Boat took me here. It was also nice to come to a place mama love so much and had come before.

I had interesting encounters and a moment to think at Kafe Magdalena, a church-run cafe for people to gather and eat. I realized the existence of poverty and alcoholism even in a developed country as Norway.
